Best Ways to Keep Your Children’s Teeth Clean

Dental health and maintaining oral hygiene is important at all stages –especially during the early years of teeth development. Parents are the role model for children. Perhaps, you have seen many children imitating their mom or dad.

The way they talk, walk, or maintain hygiene, the children reflect upon their actions. So, you need to set examples for your child and teach them to keep their teeth clean early. If they develop the habit of maintaining oral health in childhood, it will say with them forever.

1.      Brush the Teeth

The rule is simple: Brush their teeth twice a day –in the morning and at night. Make it a fun activity for your children and supervise them. You may give them a demo to brush the teeth gently and one-by-one. In the beginning, use a pea-sized amount of toothpaste (make sure it has low-fluoride).

You may hold your child’s hand (under eight years) and help them move the brush in the right direction. Clean the outer and inner sides and gums. Also, brush your child’s tongue and chewing surfaces of the teeth.

2.      Choose the Right Toothbrush

Choosing the right toothbrush is vital for keeping the teeth clean. You will easily find toothbrushes designed for children of different age groups. For instance, if you have kids aged 2-5 years choose brushes with small oval heads, cushioned handles, and soft bristles. Electric toothbrushes are also a good option and may clean the teeth better than manual toothbrushes.

After the brushing session, encourage your children to rinse the brush.  Also, place the toothbrush upright to let it dry. Replace your child’s toothbrush every 3-4 months.

3.      Floss the Teeth

When your child reaches the age of six, encourage them to floss their teeth regularly before brushing. It is the time when kids start developing adult teeth. Taking care right from the beginning will help prevent cavities or other dental problems. Also, develop the habit of rinsing their mouths after every snack to wash away the leftover food particles.

4.      Limit the Sugar Intake

The teeth of children are sensitive, and excessive consumption of sugary candies and snacks can cause tooth decay. So, you have to control their sugar intake from the beginning. Don’t let them have sugary snacks or soda drinks all the time. The carbonated drinks are harmful to your child’s teeth and may lead to serious orthodontic problems.

5.      Regular Visit to Dentist

It is one of the most important and often neglected steps for keeping your child’s teeth clean and healthy. Don’t wait for a problem to occur, and visit your child’s dentist as soon as possible. Rather, make sure to take your children regularly for a dental checkup –at least every six months.

The regular checkups help to address your child’s dental needs at an early stage. Depending on the status of your child’s dental health, the dentist may recommend visiting a dental therapist, a dental hygienist, or an oral health therapist. Frequent visits also help develop a friendly relation between your children and their dentists. Thus, they don’t whine or complain when it comes to a dental visit.

Habits developed at the early stage lasts longer. Teach your kids to keep their teeth clean in their childhood. It will help them wear a gleaming and healthier life.
