14 Oct Restore the Strength of Your Tooth Enamel
If you could look at your teeth at a microscopic level, you would find that your tooth enamel is composed of tightly packed mineral crystal structures. Every day, the acidic foods and drinks you consume, as well as the natural bacteria in your mouth, can actually erode the density of these mineral crystals.
If it is not effectively countered on a daily basis, this process of demineralization, can actually weaken your tooth enamel, making your teeth more susceptible to tooth decay and sensitivity problems. Fortunately, exposing your teeth to the presence of fluoride helps to restore the microscopic minerals in a process is known as remineralization. This effectively helps to prevent sensitivity and tooth decay.
Dr. Audrey Kemp might recommend having a routine fluoride treatment administered if you’ve had tooth decay and sensitivity issues related to enamel erosion in the past. Another option for increasing fluoride exposure every day, could include using prescription fluoride supplements.
Fluoride supplements come in several different forms including sublingual tabs, gels, mouthwash or a concentrated fluoride toothpaste.
Ingested fluoride supplements should be taken at the prescribed time. If Dr. Audrey Kemp prescribes concentrated fluoride toothpaste or mouthwash, you should apply them your teeth or rinse your mouth right before going to bed.
The goal is to apply them to your teeth at a time when you can avoid eating or drinking anything for at least half an hour, if not an hour. This will allow the fluoride to deeply penetrate the microscopic pores in your tooth enamel.
If you have questions about fluoride supplements, you should call Dr. Audrey Kemp at 919-680-3531 to schedule an appointment.
